Workshop Focus:

Spiritual Direction is a covenant relationship in which one Christian assists another or others in the discernment of God's presence and the contemplative living out of God's call. This workshop serves as an introductory training in the understanding of the basic concepts involved in the ministry of spiritual direction.

Time Frame:

There will be monthly 2-1/2 hour sessions over a six-month period.


Computer with internet connection and webcam for video conferencing. Reading of the following two books: Holy Listening: The Art of Spiritual Direction by Margaret Guenther and Sacred Companions: The Gift of Spiritual Friendship and Direction by David Benner (Books available at amazon.com).

Workshop Experience:

Class time will be spent in interactive conversation including lecture, discussion of the reading material, and "real-play" spiritual direction exercises in contemplative listening and responding.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. To learn the basic principles and skills of the ministry of Spiritual Direction.
  2. To learn ways of noticing and discerning the presence of God in all areanas of life.
  3. To become aware of the necessity of developing regular spiritual practices foundational to contemplative listening and the art of spiritual direction.
  4. To demonstrate skills in attending, responding and assessing within the context of the spiritual direction conversation.
