Spiritual Companionship

Spiritual Companionship (Spiritual Direction) is a practice dating back centuries in the Church and today is being revived in the Body of Christ as a way of companioning with another person or together with others in group for the purpose of effectively discerning the movement of God’s Spirit in life and in ministry. Benefits include a deeper relationship with God, authentic spiritual transformation and clarity in mission and vocation for both individuals and groups.

Class Outcomes. Participants can expect to take away the following:

  1. To learn the basic principles and skills of the ministry of spiritual companionship.
  2. To learn ways of noticing and discerning the presence of God in all arenas of life.
  3. To demonstrate skills in attending, responding and assessing within the context of the spiritual companionship conversation.

Class Experience. Class time will be spent in interactive conversation including lecture and reading material discussion, practical ministry assignments sharing how the Lord is at work through what the participants are learning, and “real-play” in the art and practice of spiritual companionship.

Requirements. Computer with internet and webcam access along with purchase of the following two books: Sacred Companions: The Gift of Spiritual Friendship and Direction by David Benner and Holy Listening: The Art of Spiritual Direction by Margaret Guenther (Both books available on Kindle).
